Jets fall to Falcons, 10-7

The New York Jets couldn’t weather the big Nor’easter nor the Atlanta Falcons in a disappointing 10-7 loss.

There is no doubt that it was a very blustery day as the Nor’easter pulled away from the area, but both teams were subject to play under the exact same weather conditions.

Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, in his first game back after the knee injury, found out that New York in December isn’t quite like the perfect conditions of Los Angeles.

Sanchez threw for 226 yards and a touchdown, but it was the turnover bug that bit him again. The quarterback threw three interceptions, costing his team in a big way.

Kicker Jay Feely missed two field goals and had another one blocked, so it was a lousy day for the special teams unit as well. Even running back Thomas Jones struggled, barely getting 50 yards on the ground.

Sanchez to start vs. Falcons

New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez will get the start when the team takes on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Sanchez sprained a ligament in his knee nearly two weeks ago against the Buffalo Bills when trying to scramble for a first down. He sat out last week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sanchez was incensed that he would not start against the Buccaneers and became even more angry when informed that he would not be traveling with the team to Tampa Bay.

Ryan made it a point to explain that the reason why Sanchez would not start or even travel with the team is that he wanted to the quarterback’s knee to be 100 percent for the final three games.

Kellen Clemens filled in admirably for Sanchez, who has struggled this year after getting off to a fast start. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy to see Clemens out there performing well and possibly stealing away his starting job.

Jets cruise past Bucs, 26-3

The New York Jets jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back in a 26-3 blowout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Jets were without starting quarterback Mark Sanchez, but Kellen Clemens did a nice job in place of him.

Running back Thomas Jones had another banner day, rushing for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

It was a very impressive effort from a Jets defense that seems to be gaining some steam down the stretch.

New York has now put themselves in a decent position to try and make a late season playoff push.

Sanchez to sit vs. Bucs

The New York Jets have decided that rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez will not play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In fact, head coach Rex Ryan has ruled that Sanchez will not even travel with the team so that his knee can completely heel.

The team will turn to backup Kellen Clemens, who has seen some time as the team’s starter in the past.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Sanchez is incensed with the not only the decision for him not to start, but also that he can’t travel with the team.

Ryan insists his decision was made because they want Sanchez healthy to start the final three games.

Jets knock off Bills, 19-13

The New York Jets used a balanced attack to pick up a key divisional win over the Buffalo Bills, 19-13.

Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez finally had a decent game after struggling for more than a month.

Sanchez was playing against one of the top pass defenses in the NFL, so the performance was definitely encouraging for the Jets.

Unfortunately for Sanchez, he was injured in the second half on an awkward head first drive that resulted in him banging his knee into the hard turf.

At 6-6, the Jets are now in the thick of the AFC wild card race and have also climbed back into contention in their division.

Clemens, not Sanchez, to Start for Jets

Jets coach Rex Ryan announced Wednesday that Kellen Clemens would be starting for the Jets this weekend against Tampa Bay, replacing injured starter Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez sprained the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Thursday night in the Jets’ 19-13 win over the Buffalo Bills at the end of an eight-yard run. Despite the Jets bringing in New York Yankees skipper Joe Girardi last week to give Sanchez sliding lessons, he slid head-first at the end of the run where he got injured.

In his relief will come Clemens, who stepped in during the third quarter last week after Sanchez’s injury. Clemens’ performance in that game likely won’t inspire too much confidence, as he threw all of two passes in over a quarter’s worth of action.

“Mark’s a little upset with this decision, but I think it’s in the best interest of him,” Ryan said Wednesday.

With the Jets at 6-6 and the Patriots’ upset at the hands of the Dolphins on Sunday, the Jets suddenly find themselves right back into the thick of the AFC playoff race.

They’d likely prefer Sanchez over Clemens, who will be making his ninth career NFL start, and his first start since 2007.

Sanchez Sprains PCL Against Bills

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Jets QB Mark Sanchez sprained his posterior cruciate ligament in the Jets’ 19-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.

Sanchez sprained his knee early in the third quarter, as he dove headfirst at the end of an eight-yard run that picked up a first down for the Jets. He had thrown a touchdown pass to WR Braylon Edwards at the end of the second quarter that gave the Jets a 16-10 lead.

Last week, Sanchez hurt the other knee on a run against the Carolina Panthers, which inspired the Jets to bring in New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi to give their rookie sliding lessons. Clearly, they haven’t sunk in yet.

“Sometimes, the kid’s got to understand we’re trying to teach him to slide,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “I love the kid, but he’s got to grow up and understand he represents our entire organization. We want what’s best for him.”

The source said that if Sanchez can handle the pain, he would be able to play on Dec. 13 against Tampa.

Sanchez Hurt as Jets Beat Bills, 19-13

The Jets continued their annual mid-to-late season playoff climb-and-swoon, as they beat the Buffalo Bills 19-13 on Thursday night to move to 6-6 on the season.

Thomas Jones led the Jets’ potent rushing attack with 109 yards on the ground, as the team accrued 249 total rushing yards. Between this game and their 16-13 OT loss on Oct. 18 to the Bills, the Jets rushed for a combined 567 yards in two games.

While the Jets won the battle of the night, they also suffered an injury that could have long term ramifications. A week after going down with a knee injury against the Carolina Panthers, QB Mark Sanchez left the game in the third quarter after diving head-first at the end of an eight-yard run and injuring his knee.

“I’m probably going to take some heat for not sliding. But in the heat of the momentum I was just trying to get the first down,” Sanchez said. “Tough play.”

“He’s got to understand that it’s in the organization’s best interests to slide, and that was disappointing,” said Jets coach Rex Ryan. “I love the kid, but he’s got to grow up and understand that he represents our entire organization.”

Luckily for the Jets, they didn’t need Sanchez after he built them a 16-10 lead. Their defense took over when their offensive leader went out of the game, stepping up to limit the Bills to only 36 yards in the second half. It was the second lowest second half yards total for the Bills since 1991.

Jets shut down Panthers, 17-6

The New York Jets used a strong defensive effort to shut down the Carolina Panthers in a 17-6 victory.

New York’s defense intercepted quarterback Jake Delhomme four times and ran one back for a score.

Running back Thomas Jones had a touchdown and quarterback Mark Sanchez did well to protect the ball.

With Delhomme turning it over five times, there was really no need for Sanchez to take any chances.

The win keeps hope alive for a possible wild card berth for the Jets, though they still have quite a lot of work to do.

Jets Ride Delhomme’s Four INTs to Victory, Beat Panthers 17-6

Jake Delhomme’s season ended last year with a five-interception performance against the Cardinals in the playoffs that likely gave him nightmares for months. His season began this year with another five-turnover game, this time against the Eagles, causing Monday Morning Quarterbacks nationwide to question the decision to extend Delhomme’s contract in the offseason.

On Sunday, “bad Jake” was back in force, as he threw four picks in the Panthers’ 17-6 loss to the Jets that realistically knocks the Panthers out of playoff contention.

Third-year cornerback Darrelle Revis returned the first of the Jets’ four picks for a 67-yard score in the first quarter, giving the slumping Jets some breathing room.

“That was a sigh of relief,” Revis said of his early touchdown. “That was an easy score right there. It doesn’t get any better than that to start us off.”

The Jets, who started the season setting the NFL on fire at 3-0, have since managed to lose six of their last seven (before this game), leaving the Jets players desperate for a win.

“We’re rolling now and we can’t think about a month ago,” said Jets QB Mark Sanchez, who left for four plays after injuring his left leg. “We’ve got to think about now.”

Sanchez finished the game 13-of-17 for 154 yards and an interception, a dramatic turnaround from earlier in the season when the Jets gave Sanchez total control over the offense. He and coach Rex Ryan developed a color-coded system this week to help Sanchez with his decision making on the field.

“You see what happens when I play smart,” Sanchez said. “I don’t know how to explain it, but it works.”
